If you’re searching for the best free WordPress theme then it’s worth having a look at Gazette.
What’s It Like?
Gazette is clean, simple and uncluttered. And that’s the look we’re all striving for.
This site and post may contain affiliate links from Amazon, Bluehost, Grammarly, Zazzle, WordPress, Shutterstock, Society6, Teepublic, Redbubble and if you click on a link and purchase a product from that website I will earn a small fee (which will go towards getting me Out of the Office!)
Gazette is designed by Automattic.
Who’s It For?
Gazette is particularly aimed at:
- magazine type layouts
- personal blogs
- sites with lots of content
But does it Handle Photographs?
Yes, Gazette displays photographs beautifully.
What Does the Home Page Look Like?
In common with other themes, you can choose a static home page or a page showing your latest blog posts.
Gazette certainly brings a simple and yet eye-catching design to the home page. You can feature up to six posts in a grid on the home page, but by adding the ‘featured’ tag to your posts the featured photograph will display in the featured content area which is above the post and page titles.
Use great attention-grabbing photographs for the featured posts and this will give you an attractive home page which is inviting to your readers.
How Many Menus?
Well, only two but this is typical of most free themes. You can have one menu in the header area and the Social menu in the footer. The Social menu will display icons which can be linked to your social media accounts.
Gazette offers a choice of post formats:
Each format has a special style which distinguishes it from the others.
Let’s Talk Widgets
Gazette has two optional widget areas: the righthand sidebar and a footer.
- Custom colours
- Custom header
- Custom menu
- Sticky post
- Featured images
- Different post formats
- Flexible header
- Site log
- Author bio
- Blog excerpts
- Featured Content Width Pages
- Classic menu
- Social menu
Like It or Loathe It?
I tried the WordPress theme, Gazette, on my blog Ooh Me Plates of Meat and I was very impressed with it. Initially, I was inclined to pass over this theme whilst browsing the WordPress theme choices, as it appeared to be too basic, but I think the finished product is beautiful in its simplicity.
This WordPress theme is easy to set up and easy to use. Photographs look great on this blog; I love the headers and the minimalist streamlined glossiness. The blog post displays are clear and easy to read.
Gazette is as good as some of the premium WordPress themes and I highly recommend it. Its ease of use means you can concentrate on writing great content whilst the appearance of your blog takes care of itself.
Meaning of Gazette
A journal or newspaper
Gazette is a good choice for a free WordPress theme – why not give it a try?
Please note that Ooh Me Plates of Meat is currently using the Gazette theme at the time of writing and may now be using a different theme!
